What is “Intermittent Fasting”?

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is an eating pattern where meals are limited to specific hours of the day (e.g. 8 hours of eating, 16 hours of fasting). During the fasting window, you can drink calorie-free beverages like water, black coffee, or herbal tea. It’s not a diet - it doesn’t tell you what to eat, only when.

Intermittent fasting may work well for people who:

• want to reduce snacking,

• aim to lose weight,

• are active but can’t eat during much of the day.

It is not recommended for people who:

• are underweight or malnourished,

• suffer from eating disorders (e.g. anorexia, bulimia, orthorexia),

• have digestive diseases (e.g. acid reflux, stomach ulcers),

• have hormonal disorders (e.g. diabetes, menstrual issues in women, thyroid problems),

• are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If in doubt, consult a doctor or dietitian.

In the Fitatu® app, you’ll find 4 of the most popular IF patterns:

  • 14:10
  • 16:8 (available in the free version),
  • 18:6
  • 20:4

The first number is fasting hours, the second is the eating window.

Fitatu® lets you choose your fasting plan and supports you with stats and a fasting schedule. An animated timer helps you smoothly follow your fasting and eating windows. You can also set reminders for when to start and end your fast.

With Fitatu® Premium or Fitatu® Premium+AI, you can also use IF on your Apple Watch: monitor, start, and stop fasting even faster without taking out your phone.
