How not to get fat on holiday? These tips will help you survive!

The long-awaited rest has finally arrived. It is high time to reset the mind, regenerate the body and soul. If you are worried that holiday pleasures might ruin your year-long efforts, then today’s article is just for you.

We’re all human, so no one here is going to stand there with a whip watching over you to see if a healthy, dietetic lunch hasn’t been replaced by an appetising-looking waffle with whipped cream on your menu 😉 If you want to indulge in small pleasures, you should do it on holiday. Of course, we encourage you to do everything in moderation.

Movement is essential

Make sure you spend your holiday as active as possible. Walk, walk and walk some more. A bike ride or swimming would also be a good idea. We often receive questions from our users such as: how long should a given activity last for me to burn 500 kcal? Unfortunately, there is no rule here. The human body is not a machine, it is impossible to calculate and plan everything.

The number of calories burned, for the same activity at the same time, is influenced by factors such as gender, age, intensity and technique of exercise, and even environmental factors such as altitude, temperature or humidity, among others.

You can check the estimated number of calories burned in the Fitatu application. In the calculations, it takes into account information about you (including gender and body weight).

Drink, especially water

It’s simple, but unfortunately, when we interrupt our daily routine on holiday, we very often forget about it. The high temperatures are not conducive to hydration, either, encouraging us to reach for cool, colourful drinks.

Alcohol is a controversial topic as it usually goes hand in hand with salty snacks or even with a barbecue. However, as we mentioned in the introduction – everything is for the people. If you prefer drinks, go for those with zero alcohol, but the best alternative is dry wine with ice.

Also make sure you have a reusable bottle (preferably one with a measuring cup so you can control your water intake) and try not to part with it. There are also bottles with a built-in filter, which should be an attractive solution especially for mountain hikers – filtered, ice-cold water from a mountain stream will quench your thirst perfectly.

Important!
Quite recently we touched on the very important role that regular hydration plays in a diet. No matter what the temperature or how active you are on your holiday, make sure you always have a bottle of water to hand!

You don’t have to starve yourself

Finally, and most importantly, the answer to the question: do you need to break healthy eating habits and diet on holiday? Absolutely not. We offer proven, ready-made solutions for every situation.

A great option would be accommodation with an available kitchenette or worktop to prepare your own meals. Of course, you’re on holiday and may not have the slightest desire to spend half your holiday in the kitchen. However, in the Fitatu application, you will find many recipes for really simple and quick to prepare dishes. Two or three ingredients are enough to eat tasty and nutritious, and the difference in the meals you prepare will also be felt by your wallet.

It is said that grilling is the national sport of the Poles. No wonder – we are really good at it! In addition to the classic sausage, pork neck, and shashlik skewers, there are more and more sophisticated and tasty alternatives being put on the hot grill.  For many, a holiday is the only opportunity to indulge in such a relaxing activity as watching delicacies fry. Just remember to choose lean meat or vegetables instead of classic sausage.

Before the pandemic, many resorts also offered a buffet option, ideal for those who want to follow a diet and like to know what was on their plate. However, it is difficult to say whether all owners, due to numerous restrictions, have decided to make this form of food available this year as well. If you do have the option of a buffet, try to vary your meals, having pasta one day and rice the next. Avoid extra portions.

What about fried fish and dining out in restaurants, which is particularly desirable by the sea? You can, why not. We rather recommend smoked or grilled fish, and the best choice in terms of calories is cod, there are only 70 kcal in 100 g of fish. In good restaurants you will also find healthy and wholesome items such as seafood, salads and steamed dishes.

At the very end, the most important thing to remember is regularity. Just like with water, our daily routine will be disrupted due to the number of activities and the change in mode, but the key to success is to stick to the recommended calorie count and eat regular meals. Water, exercise, regular food and a moderately healthy menu and you’re sure to return from your holiday without too much excess baggage.

You can monitor your diet, the amount of water you drink and your physical activity using the Fitatu application. More information about Fitatu can be found at: https://www.fitatu.com

In the meantime, we are packing our exercise mat, blender (yes, yes, it saved our lives more than once on holiday and it doesn’t take up that much space) and a bottle and off we go for a well-deserved rest!
